Welcome to the Southend
District LTA website
The Southend & District LTA Championships were first held in 1920 and the Men’s League was won by Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club. The trophy was presented to the association by the Westcliff Theatrical Dramaticus Society. However, what happened between then and 1929 is not known and so far as the League Championship is concerned, it began its history in 1930. The League’s were suspended during the war years and did not resume until 1947, and since then they have run un-interrupted to this day. Its biggest battles have occurred between Westcliff Hard LTC (Formerly The Ridgeway) and Thorpe Bay LTC, and between 1963 and 1983 these two clubs would be the only winners of the Men’s League Division 1. The Annual Tournaments have also been a success, running from 1945 and has been won by David Lloyd on numerous occasions.
The Southend & District LTA is now only a small organisation, but what it lacks in size is made up for in quality. There are no player entry restrictions and as such the leagues and tournaments feature many County and National League standard players. Indeed there are very few league associations across the country that can boast former Davis Cup players in its competitions. Our defending Men’s Champions is currently No2 in the county and ranked 45th nationally and our Ladies Champion won the 2007 Redbridge Summer Series.
In 2009 the League underwent a re-branding and now has a Men’s and Ladies Premier League, a Senior Mixed Doubles League, Veterans Mixed Doubles League as well as a Junior Singles League that is LTA Sanctioned (Boys and Girls U16, U14, U12 and a combined U10 league). The Tournaments are still operating both in the Summer and Winter Season and continues to be very popular with some very strong entries each year.

Pace-setting duo warm to the job Update 15/07/10

TABLE-TOPPING Ethan Evison and Ben Mason turned up the heat under a blazing sun in the third round of the Southend & District LTA junior grands prix.
The pair were occupying the top spots in Group A of the mini tennis green leagues and locked horns in a battle to claim top spot.
Ben looked set for an easy win with a comfortable 4-1 first set score. But Ethan finished as runner-up last year and showed he wanted the championship this time around as he dug in to level 4-4 in the second set and force a tie break.
Following 70 minutes of play, the match would be decided on seven points. Ethan dropped the first one, but won the next seven to level the match at a set each.
Both players had a deserved drinks break before emabarking on a champions tie break that saw Ethan continue his left-right strategy on court. Ben responded well but found himself 6-0 down, before Ethan’s double fault made it 6-1.
Ben made it 6-2 and despite controlling the point, Ethan found a chink in his opponent’s armour to take the point and a 7-2 win, although Ben leads the group by a point.
Matthew Basham ended Joanna Rimmington’s Group C winning run with a 4-0 4-0 victory.
Matthew holds top spot on sets difference although he, Joanna and Luke Simson all have nine points.
Jordan Farrell moved up to second in Group B with a 4-1 4-2 win over Harry Smith, while Harvey Franklin’s 5-3 11-4 7-5 success over Callum Hadley moved him off the bottom of the table.
It was the first league victory for Jordan, Harvey and Harry Smith, who beat Steven Byford 5-3 5-3.
Hockley’s Alice Lacey continued her impressive run in the Girls’ U12 with another victory over club-mate Julia Edwards. This marathon match was a hard battle of attrition in the heat, lasting just under two hours. Alice took the first set with a single break 6-3, and finally managed to claim the second set with a late break at 5-5 for a 7-5 victory. At the half way point and with a 100 per cent win rate, with no sets dropped, it looks a near certainty for Alice progressing to the play-offs.
Many of the girls were missing for this round as both Thorpe Bay and Hockley had a finals day in which many of the girls were either participating or volunteering their help to the events. Mini Green (U10): Harvey Franklin v Callum Hadley 5-3 1-4 7-5, Lucy Bailes v Max Bailes 0-4 0-4, Ethan Evison v Ben Mason 1-4 5-4 7-2, Chloe Smith v Luke Simpson 0-4 1-4, Greg Oxlade v Nat Turner 5-4 4-1, Harry Smith v Steven Byford 5-3 5-3, Joanna Rimmington v Matthew Basham 0-4 0-4, Harry Smith v Jordan Farrell 1-4 2-4. BOYS TEAM TENNIS
JUNIORS REVVED UP FOR GP START Update 26/05/10
THE Southend & District LTA junior grands prix started its summer season with the first round at Rochford tennis club.
Sunday’s action started with the mini tennis green (U10) boys’ and girls’ combined leagues. Rochford’s Ben Ford was drawn against Jordan Farrell of Rayleigh. Jordan took the first set in the tie break for 5-4, but Ben claimed the second set with a tie break victory to level the match. The match was settled by a champions tie break and saw Ben win 7-5 to get himself off to a winning start in group B.
Southend Lawn’s Chloe Smith faced Joanna Rimmington from Hockley in Group C. Joanna took the first set 4-0, but was made to work harder in the second, despite the score line of 4-1. In group A, Ben Mason of Westcliff Hard got off to a winning start against Gregory Oxlade from David Lloyd Southend with a 4-2 4-0 win to take the early top spot.
The girls’ U12s saw Jessica Bunting of Westcliff Hard face a tough opener against Hockley’s Julia Edwards. It seemed like Jess would get an easy win after her first set victory of 6-2. But Julia claimed the second set 6-4 and take the match to a champions tie-breaker. This was a tentative affair which Jessica eventually won 10-6.
Alice Boston of Deanes claimed the top spot after the first round of fixtures with a 6-2 6-3 win over Westcliff Lawn’s Sacha Jonas.
In the U14’s Vicky Wilson from David Lloyd powered her way to victory with some very strong serves over Hayley Needs from Westcliff Hard. Hayley did all she could to defend against Vicky’s strong serving and put up a good fight before losing 6-2 6-1, although spectators reckoned Hayley deserved to earn a few more games for her determined effort.
The match of the round in the U16s came from Rayleigh’s Amy Mower, who faced Shannon Wood of Rochford in the opening game. Shannon coasted to an early lead of 3-0, but then Amy fought back to get a 4-3 lead. With both girls holding serve, the set finished 6-6 and was decided by a tie break. Shannon managed to get ahead and claim that 7-5 and take the first set. Amy then took an early second set lead, before Shannon levelled. This looked as if it would go to a tie breaker, but Shannon stole a break of serve and claimed the set 6-4 and with it the match.
The next round is at David Lloyd Southend on Sunday, June 13.
